I recall when I first started attending Unity services and Rev Ken would always say to be still and listen for guidance and wisdom. At the time that was a foreign idea to me, for I thought problems were solved through my incessant thinking things through and it was only through thinking that I would know what to do.
Similarly, a woman shared that the other day as she was done with her work and her kids were away, she looked around and just didn’t know what to do with herself. So she said “self, what are you going to do now?” This revved up, constant doing mode, in Unity we could call “The Martha mode” many of us experience.
A friend of mine shared with me that he was on the phone with his mother. He asked what she was doing and her reply was taking down the drapes to wash them. No matter the age the restlessness and need to keep moving is quite intense.
Yet we were not always that way.
As children, we couldn’t wait to be done with our school work so we could play, ride bikes, play marbles, dolls, toy cars. Of course we didn’t have cell phones and video games.
When we take time to BE STILL, unplug from the world of things, we are taking command of those racing thoughts in the mind. If we are observant, we notice a spaciousness, a gap between the racing thoughts.
It is in the stillness, the quality of our thoughts change. They are not hurried nor worried nor urgent; they are not about fixing anyone or anything.
Divine ideas, guidance and wisdom are filled with a sense of knowing all is well, and our thoughts become filled with appreciation, gratitude and love for every experience we have had and we have faith that Spirit’s guidance is always for the highest and best.
