When I first discovered Unity, I attended Unity of Fort Myers and the minister, Rev Ken Murdoch was my reintroduction to the Bible. I had turned away from the Bible as irrelevant to me, and wasn’t thrilled with all its dualistic teachings. Yet it was through Unity that I brought the bible back into my life.
I was recently asked which Bible version was the most accurate? That is hard to answer because Bibles were written for a specific audience and purpose and often much of it’s spirit is lost in the translation. However, The Bible stories we learned as a child shape our world view. Our culture has embedded these stories into our psyche and we can never walk away from them.
Yet when we see the Bible as a story of humanity’s conscious evolution, it becomes a tool we can use to gain more spiritual awareness, and we can see how these Bible stories and the qualities the characters embody show us the connection between our thoughts/feelings and experiences.
The Bible interpreted through the lens of metaphysics, the study of ontology, of Being, gives us insight and helps deepen our understanding into civilizations’ long held beliefs and behaviors. Unity is a positive progressive path of practical Christianity, a path of spiritual living. A metaphysical lens means “how do these qualities embodied in these character show up in me.” “how is this situation similar to what is happening in our world today.” Am I being courageous and showing up, knowing God is in this situation, or am I hiding from it all. Please know we all do both
Our Co-founder Charles Fillmore , in The Revealing Word writes “The Bible is the sacred and inspired Scriptures of the Christian religion. It is a divine ‘book of life’ rather than merely a history of people and it bears ‘witness unto the word’ of God. ( Acts 14:3)
And so again we ask, how is the Bible relevant to us today?
Let us look at one scripture from Micah, which was one of Rev Ken’s favorite scriptures. In fact he took the name Micah and embodied and lived those characteristics.
The Scripture is Micah 6:8) Micah was asking God how best to live, should I give offerings, caves maybe, or my first born? The response he heard was
“To do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God!”
In other words, “keep it simple.” “Know you are the beloved and “do what you love.”
