House of Cards or House of Prayer

You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free ” (John 8:32)

Many years ago, one spring morning, I sat outside in my lanai,  and listened to a symphony of birds;  crow’s, blue jays, sand cranes.  The birds were perched high in the trees, their songs created a pause.in my mind as I listened into their tunes. All lullabies of Spirit touching our Soul.

I was called from this reverie by the phone ringing.  It was my daughter Jill.  I could hear my granddaughter’s voice, Emily, in the background. She was building a house of cards, and she needed some tape to hold her house of cards together.

All of us live in a “house of Cards.”  I am reminded of all the times I set about putting my “house” in order.   The thought structures that seemed reasonable and stable. The need for extra insurance, the need to install storm proof window shutters or alarm systems for strength and security.

But what an withstand against the winds of Spirit?

Winds embrace and soothe us, while slowly eroding the sands of earth from all form  – mountains, rocks, shutters – all shifting ever so slightly sending tiny life forms scurrying.

To know the Truth that will set us free, we must shift our attention to what is beneath our thoughts, opinions, beliefs and intellectual certainty to watching and listening deeply within our being.

“I die daily,” says Saint Paul. The I that dies is our personal sense of self; our limiting concepts, fears and judgments.  Our house of cards, built from learned beliefs; phantoms of ignorance that imprison us  and make us believe we are separate from life.

These self-conscious thoughts hold us captive from the heart of the mystery which embraces all life. When we step outside ourselves and observe, we notice as Charles Fillmore says, in Keep a True Lent, “That every time we speak we cause the cells of our body to tremble.”

Underneath the personal ego is a Field of Love embracing and caressing us.  It is this which holds the crow as it cries, the blue jay as it chirps, the leaves as they rustle, the shifting landscape that lies flat, the mountains, and the cards and the tape that Emily uses to build her house of cards.

Let us shift from living in our House of Cards and listen, receive and experience the wisdom Song of Spirit, for this is the song of the Universe, the One song that quivers within, reminding us of whose we are.

Affirm:  “I am the Truth, the Way and the Life.  Know this Truth and the Truth will make you free.”
Blessings, Rev Janice
