Spiritual Purpose

The world has many religions, and hundreds of divisions and sects within them. Not unlike Hellenism, In Greek mythology there are 12 main Olympic Gods who lived on Mt. Olympus.  Hellenism is polytheistic religion and depending on their needs people  prayed to their respective Gods.

If a woman wanted to conceive or wanted their land to be fertile they would pray to Demeter, the Goddess of fertility. The Greek pantheon was led by Zeus. All of these God’s exhibited human traits.

Jesus was born into a Hellenistic society based on polytheism; although he was a Jew and raised in a Jewish community  his world was a Hellenistic culture and Greek philosophy was prevalent.

Every religion tries to explain the natural world and the human experience.  It’s purpose was to help people find a relationship with the Gods, and later with monotheism, the One God.

We are freed from the burden of worshiping anything outside of us on a Mountain or a well or a sacred crystal or stone. Jesus, our way shower even said to us in John 4 ”  “… God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Unity, is based on practical Christianity, which means it’s teachings invite us to have a personal experience and relationship with the God of our Being.

Ralph Waldo Emerson inflamed the religious community when he asked “Why should we not have a first-hand and immediate experience of God?”

Our spiritual purpose is to be an open instrument and to devote ourselves to serving the God of our Being.  May we reach a point where we cease seeking the approval of Gods outside ourselves; let us be done with letting our ego slap us around; Let us realize our One spiritual purpose is to know God and to experience the Presence firsthand.   As Buckminster Fuller,  says “No second-hand God for me.”

Join us this Sunday and experience the Power, Faith and Grace of Unity.

Blessings, Rev Janice
